Desperate Yankees rally past Mariners 7-4

Bobby Abreu homered and drove in three runs, Jason Giambi also connected and the New York Yankees rallied for five runs in the seventh inning to beat the Seattle Mariners 7-4 on Saturday night.One night after Brandon Morrow held them hitless for 7 2-3 innings in his first major league start, the Yankees overcame four RBIs by Seattle's Raul Ibanez to move within 7 1/2 games of Boston in the AL wild-card standings. more >>

Aurilia helps rally Giants to 7-6 win over Pirates

Rich Aurilia hit one of three Giants home runs and San Francisco finally beat the Pittsburgh Pirates at home, 7-6 on Saturday night. Scott McClain homered for the second time in four games and Nate Schierholtz hit his first career home run to help the Giants snap a seven-game losing streak at home against the Pirates. The Giants hadn't beaten the Pirates at AT&T Park since June 8, 2006. more >>

Thome homers in 15th to pass Mantle, lift ChiSox

Jim Thome homered in the 15th inning to pass Mickey Mantle on the career list and give the Chicago White Sox a 7-6 victory over the Los Angeles Angels that extended their AL Central lead Saturday night. Thome's 537th home run came off Justin Speier (1-8) and put him in sole possession of 14th place. The White Sox moved 2 1/2 games in front of second-place Minnesota with their third consecutive victory and second in a row over the Angels in this showdown of division leaders. more >>

Red Sox lose 15-8 at Texas, fail to gain ground

Tim Wakefield's milestone appearance for Boston ended with his shortest outing of the season and kept the Red Sox from getting closer to the AL East leader. The knuckleballer, pitching his 500th game for Boston, allowed seven runs in a span of nine batters in the second inning, and the Texas Rangers went on to a 15-8 victory Saturday night that ended Boston's four-game winning streak. more >>

Soriano hits 3 HRs, Cubs outslug Reds to end slide

Alfonso Soriano homered three times at the top of Chicago's retooled batting order, and the first-place Cubs emerged from their longest losing streak of the season by keeping their composure and beating the Cincinnati Reds 14-9 on Saturday night to end a six-game slide. Soriano was the Cubs' Mr. September last season, leading their final surge toward the NL Central title by hitting a club-record 14 homers in the month. Rays activate 3B Evan Longoria from 15-day DL

Evan Longoria was activated off the 15-day disabled list Saturday after the Tampa Bay slugger said he felt "almost 100 percent" following 30 swings with a regular bat. Longoria won't be returning to the lineup right away. Rays manager Joe Maddon wants the rookie third baseman to take two or three days of regular batting practice first, meaning Longoria likely will be available only as a defensive replacement until the Rays open a three-game series at New York on Friday. more >>

Ramirez, Billingsley lead Dodgers into first place

The Arizona Diamondbacks gave Manny Ramirez three chances to hurt them Saturday. He came through twice, and that was enough for the streaking Los Angeles Dodgers. Ramirez hit a three-run homer in the fifth inning to break a scoreless tie and added a two-run double in the sixth, helping the Dodgers beat Brandon Webb and the Diamondbacks 7-2 to take over sole possession of first place in the NL West for the first time since April 4. more >>

The remnants of Tropical Storm Hanna washed away the Philadelphia Phillies-New York Mets game Saturday afternoon and left in her wake one intriguing day-night doubleheader. Want pitching? New York will start three-time Cy Young Award winner Pedro Martinez in the first game Sunday at 2:15 p.m., and Johan Santana, winner of two Cy Youngs, in the 8:05 p.m. nightcap. Morrow nearly no-hits Yankees in 1st start

Brandon Morrow's bid to become only the second pitcher in modern history to throw a no-hitter in his first major league start ended when pinch-hitter Wilson Betemit doubled with two outs in the eighth inning, and the Seattle Mariners beat the New York Yankees 3-1 Friday night. The 24-year-old righty, whose 100 previous big league outings were all in relief, blanked the Yankees until Betemit, batting for Jose Molina, lined a clean drive far over right fielder Ichiro Suzuki. The hit scored Hideki Matsui, who had walked with one out on a close 3-2 pitch. Morrow angrily barked an expletive at himself as he walked back to the mound. more >>

AL home run leader Quentin breaks wrist

American League home run leader Carlos Quentin has a broken right wrist stemming from his own temper, and the Chicago White Sox left fielder will have surgery Monday that could sideline him for the rest of the season. Quentin was injured Monday night in Cleveland. After fouling off a pitch while batting against Cliff Lee, Quentin hit his right hand on the bat as he was holding it with his left. more >>

Uribe homers twice and White Sox beat Angels 10-2

Juan Uribe homered twice, Paul Konerko added a solo shot and Mark Buehrle pitched six shutout innings to help the Chicago White Sox beat the Los Angeles Angels 10-2 in a meeting of division leaders on Friday night. The White Sox didn't miss AL home run leader Carlos Quentin, who will undergo surgery Monday on a fractured right wrist and could be lost for the season. more >>

Bruce's grand slam leads Reds over Cubs 10-2

Jay Bruce hit his first career grand slam and Joey Votto added a two-run homer Friday night, an all-rookie power display that sent the Cincinnati Reds to a 10-2 victory on a day when nothing went right for the first-place Chicago Cubs. Manager Lou Piniella got lost on his way to the ballpark. Starter Ted Lilly lasted a season-low two innings.
