Questions about Exelon’s nuclear plant
advertising
Editor, the Advocate:

Questions about the proposed nuclear plant:

How many jobs will be created during construction, and how many will remain to operate the plant? Won’t construction of this facility cost much more than Exelon alone can finance? How much of the enormous cost will be subsidized by federal taxes? Will the cost of electric utilities be reduced or increased by this proposed plant? Shouldn’t such a facility be located 50 miles from a city, in the event of a disastrous accident? Wouldn’t proximity of a nuclear facility less than 30 miles form Victoria be a deterrent to people who might otherwise consider purchasing a home in our beautiful city? Knowing that nuclear fission produces a very dangerous by-product that must be kept from human contact for thousands of generations, what permanent arrangement have been made for storage of high level nuclear waste? Is the proposed storage facility at Yucca Mountain, Nev., completely invulnerable to the furies of nature, such as earthquakes or volcanic eruptions? How would this very dangerous substance be transported across the country? Since the power plant itself cannot continue operating idefinitely, who will pay for dismantling and disposing of it? In determining cost-benefit ratio, would the short-term benefit of such a facility be worth the long-time cost?
