THUMBS UP

Thumbs up to days the newspaper misses the rain puddle, to rain that is good but hard on grain crops, for Rush Limbaugh who tells it like it is, for Texas landowners who held out against the fence, to ECO relief checks that lets me pay my bills, and to English as the U.S. language.

THUMBS DOWN

Thumbs down to all the fatal accidents we’ve had during the past month.

Thumbs down to people who drive with a cell phone stuck in their ears. One turned in front of me the other day and I nearly broadsided them. They never saw me.

Thumbs down to too many catalogues — one per season is OK — to the fence along the Rio Grande in the Valley — Roma to Brownsville — bad for people and animals, to lawn mowers without mufflers.

FROM THE EDITORIAL BOARD

THUMBS UP

Thumbs up to Bay City’s mayor who finally agreed to release results of an independent audit of all city credit card transactions between 2004 and 2008. The Matagorda Advocate had requested this information under Freedom of Information guidelines to get at the truth regarding allegations of misuse of city finances.

Thumbs up to Poco Bueno, an international fishing tournament staged right in our own back yard in Port O’Conner.

Thumbs up to the Mexican Navy, which seized a small, homemade submarine off its Pacific Coast, suspecting the vessel was being used for drug smuggling.

Thumbs up to the Home Depot Team volunteers who used their day off to make vital improvements to the historic McNamara House, laboring right on through the hot, humid weather to help their community.

Thumbs up to the Victoria Professional Express Network and the Project Runway fashion show which they put on to raise money for scholarships and other worthy causes.

Thumbs up to The Vine School, a new school for autistic children here in Victoria. The school was the brainchild of John and Melody Handley and Erin Hatley. Besides providing a needed service, the school will be an added attraction for those considering a move to Victoria.

Thumbs up to H-E-B for sponsoring the Rose Parade, which raised awareness of local charities and medical problems. H-E-B also presents the Feast of Sharing, a Christmas dinner for those who might not otherwise have such a meal. H-E-B is a good neighbor in our community.

Thumbs up to former Cpl. Jeffrey Carisalez of Victoria who acted as a military adviser for the HBO mini-series “Generation Kill.”

Thumbs up to Officer Sam Jones of the Cuero Police Department upon receiving a Lifesaving Award. Jones worked hard to revive Rosilind Louise Smith after her heart had stopped, and he managed to stabilize her until Cuero EMS arrived.

THUMBS DOWN

Thumbs down on U.S. Airways if what its pilots are claiming is true. The pilots say they’re pressured to fly with less fuel than the amount they feel safe, to save on fuel costs by cutting the weight of their planes.
