McCain should choose Colin Powell for VP

Editor, the Advocate:Let’s not elect our next president on just the color of his skin. Let’s make sure he is qualified. To be qualified, the person must have a background of listening to people who are unbiased, not prejudiced and love America because of its diversity. more >>

Obamas too close to the Rev. Jeremiah Wright

Editor, the Advocate: Michelle Obama is a disgrace to our nation and our freedom and said she was never proud of her country. Now that her husband wants to become president of the United States, she goes around waving, hugging and kissing people with a deceitful smile as if there is no place like America. more >>

Editor, the Advocate: I would like to express my sincerest thanks and appreciation to all who responded to assist in the rescue of the young man trapped at the top of the tanks at our grain facility in El Toro. more >>

Owners of small water wells should know rules

Editor, the Advocate: Residential and agricultural water-well owners need to be aware that Victoria Groundwater Conservation District is in the process of writing rules that will affect their wells. These small wells will be exempt from regulation, however rules are being written that will affect water in those wells. Most voters, who confirmed our district, did so with the understanding that the district could protect our aquifer from harmful export. Unfortunately, under current law, export may not be treated more restrictively than local use. Our district must walk a fine line between protecting local wells and allowing export. If rules are too restrictive on export, the district gets sued by those wishing to take our water. If rules are written too transport permissive, we are exposed to massive export projects such as GBRA’s pipeline. The secret is to craft rules that will give reasonable protection until things can be legislatively fixed. Citizen input is now being solicited by the district to help write these rules. more >>

Council works on its own agenda

Editor, the Advocate: Why is it that the major streets in the town of Victoria are in need of repair, the infrastructure needs repair and the traffic signals need upgrading? We have a city council that chooses to spend the taxpayers’ money on unrelated business. For example, it sets aside money for the defense of four high profile individuals, and also sets money aside for a hike and bike trail. These are just two things that come to mind, but, as I am saying, the city council has its own agenda and not one for the people. more >>

Good things too good to be true

Editor, the Advocate: Strange that Al-Maliki is wanting a time table for the U.S. troops to leave Iraq so soon after his kissy, kissy visit to Iran. Wonder what the locals are saying? more >>

Pay your own way is a better plan for life

Editor, the Advocate: In regards to your article, Colonia Sewage Problems: Another government handout gone bad. Santa Rosa and other colonias, were built for years with no adequate or any sewage systems with the knowledge that sooner or later “Uncle Sam,” i.e. American taxpayers would foot the bill for flushable toilets! Ah, but something went amiss. more >>

Sisters are where they were called by God

Editor, the Advocate: There is a foolish idea circulating that women who live in convents have run there for protection and to hide because they are afraid of the world. Somehow, goes the rumor, the Sisters settle for a life of spiritual complacency. How far from the truth could one be? more >>

Rent at mansion is waste of money

Editor, the Advocate: There is no question that the Governor’s Mansion should be rebuilt. However, Gov. and Mrs. Perry could set an example for all Texans by finding living quarters that cost less than the current rent of $10,000 per month. That $120,000 per year could buy a lot of needed construction material. more >>

Family offers thanks for care and support

Editor, the Advocate: We have been blessed with the outpouring of love and support from so many, too many to name. You know in your hearts if you sent food, mass donations, thoughtful words or did a kind deed while we were suffering the loss of our dad and husband, Adolph Vincik. We appreciate all of these things. We do want to acknowledge the dedication of the staffs at Care Inn and Southbrooke Manor of Edna and Crown Hospice in Victoria. The family of Adolph Vincik thanks you. more >>

Say ‘No’ to Exelon

Editor, the Advocate: To all you people out there who believe this Exelon plant is such a great advantage for our area, think again! As is stated in the TSEPA advertisement in the Victoria Advocate, “Most of the people making the decisions to build this nuclear plant near Victoria — and profiting from it — don’t even live in Texas.” more >>

One more judge will make final decision

Editor, the Advocate: Softly, I will toss in my two cents worth; it refers more or less to the case we read about in the past few days, about Mr. Michael Ratcliff. My, my, he, plus many others, think they are above the “law.” Can’t say justice was served. Yes where is justice? Very few people are up on it. So guilty, yet such a light dose he gets. I wonder where all this is headed for? No good, to my thinking. Yes, no man is above the law on earth, nor even beyond the grave. We still have to answer to the “One” who is “God” for He, “God,” judges our hearts, and, to reach perfection, the heart has to be pure and free of evil. more >>

Engagement dinner made successful

Editor, the Advocate: I wanted to take to time to thank all those at the new Tokyo Steakhouse for making my engagement wonderful. Chad the manager did a fantastic job of making sure that everything was perfect, including reserving the table that I picked out, and even personally writing the message that was given to my fiance on her dessert plate. I heard it took eight attempts before it was perfect. He even followed me to the mens room to make sure I wasn't sick from nervousness. The waitresses, and chefs were great, the food was spectacular, and the memories will last a lifetime. Thanks for everything, it couldn't have been more perfect. more >>

Give lie detector test to public officials

Editor, the Advocate: I believe the majority consensus among Victorians is to do something to restore creditability in our local government employees, and, thereby, giving back confidence to our citizenry. How about this: Let’s get an independent, creditable and accredited polygraph team. Then let’s give exams to “every” public servant, the city, the county, the district attorney, I mean everyone. Just ask this: “Have you ever committed a felony or aided in anyway in the commission of a felony?” I guess it would be cost prohibitive. But you know what? I bet you that $200,000 would give it a good start. more >>

Magic mushrooms used in cancer patients’ study

Editor, the Advocate: This letter is in response to the story, “Study finds benefits in magic mushrooms,” (Advocate, July 1,) written by Malcolm Ritter. I found this article to be very interesting and chose to do a little further research about the magical mushrooms. The mushrooms referred to in your article are an illegal drug known as psilocybin (pronounced SILL-oh-SY-bin). Your article described a study in which volunteers who took the drug described a long-term enhanced sense of well-being as well as production of intensified spiritual experiences. more >>
