Homework, early hours cause loss of sleep

Editor, the Advocate: In V.I.S.D., the school hours run from 8:05 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. However, students from elementary to high school struggle each morning with staying awake in class. more >>

Victoria needs to be a better place to have fun

Editor, the Advocate: Do you sometimes wonder why Victoria doesn't expand to its full potential? Despite the economic boom on the north end of the city, I think Victoria could benefit its surrounding population a bit more. more >>

Our teachers need more pay and more respect

Editor, the Advocate: Teachers in our very respectful schools should be paid more then they are. If you look at it, teachers put up with more than enough troubles of their own and have to worry about the students' troubles. more >>

Regulating oil prices will save oil field jobs

Editor, the Advocate: I have many friends in the oil field business. As the fuel prices fluctuate, I see oil field jobs fluctuate as well. When fuel prices are high, jobs are abundant. When fuel prices are low, businesses feel the effect and have to cut back by either laying off people or shutting down. We need to regulate the price of fuel so it's good for oil field as well as the consumer. more >>

School policy on tardies unfair, student says

Editor, the Advocate: Memorial High School's new tardy policy is completely ridiculous. I hardly believe that two tardies deserve an hour and a half in d-hall after school. more >>

Victoria needs a diverse economy to survive

Editor, the Advocate: Wake up Victoria! The election is over. We are in recession and it will take time to recover. Alcoa is reducing their work force by 25 percent and I hear from authoritative sources that one of the major chemical companies is reducing their product output, which will probably mean reduction of the work force at a later date. more >>

Additional classes unnecessary

Editor, the Advocate: Why does Memorial High School make students take classes they don't need. For example, if I had only two credits to get my senior year, they would make me take five more just to fill up my schedule. I don't see any point in this. All the school is doing is wasting our time and possibly hurting our GPA. It's almost as if our school doesn't want to give us any freedom whatsoever. If we've done our part, they should let the students have a year that's stress free. Our school should be happy for us and do their part by congratulating us instead of packing on and extra five hours. more >>

Having 'Pride' makes football games great

Editor, the Advocate: The Memorial High School football team, to me, has done so good this year. During spirit week, I saw more "Viper Pride" then I had in the past three years I've been here. They pump us up before the game, and the players put on such a good game and play so hard that I don't care about the score. I'm so proud of them, and it makes me proud to say "Viper Pride" because I've never had this pride. And I also want to thank the coaches. All of you have done an amazing job with the players. more >>

Being noble won't get you into heaven

Editor, the Advocate: Many ghosts haunt the Alamo, according to employees and tourists there. The spirits appear to be of some of the heroic defenders (Davy Crockett, Jim Bowie and others) many Mexican honored soldiers, some wailing Mexican women and some children, 10-12 years old. more >>
