Envelope found: belongs to couple

Editor, the Advocate:I am searching for an elderly couple who entered the Sears Store at the Victoria Mall on Thursday, Sept. 18 around 10 a.m., went to the service department and left the store a few minutes later. The only information that I was able to obtain was that they were possibly from Tivoli. As per the security cameras at Sears, they dropped an envelope as they entered the doors in the electronics department. As I was leaving the store, I found it, and it has been turned over to the Victoria Police Department. For more information, they can contact the security department at Sears or call the Victoria Police Department. more >>

Some ‘dog lovers’ lack responsibility

Editor, the Advocate: To all you folks, “dog lovers”: I am awfully sorry for the death of any pet, but these pets that were at the county pound were not loved or taken care of by their owners, or they would not be running our streets. They were unwanted. more >>

Sterilization breaks many codes

Editor, the Advocate: Having read your Saturday’s front page headlines regarding a Victoria judge’s wanting to have a woman sterilized to prevent more positive cocaine births, I had expected some timely follow-up. Surely, so novel a proposal has raised some questions. more >>

Sanctuary Movement’s hypocrisy

Editor, the Advocate: Finally, someone with the intestinal fortitude to take on the Sanctuary Movement and point out the hypocrisy of their position (Church leaders should be humanitarians, not politicians). Your editorial was both timely and right on the money. If those involved in aiding and abetting the violation of our immigration laws want the right to rant from the pulpit in support of their actions, they can easily do so legally. All they have to do is join the rest of us and start paying taxes. Alternatively, if they wish to continue enjoying their special nonprofit tax status, which means those of us who pay taxes must pay more to make up for the taxes they do not pay, they should just shut up. Like almost everyone on this planet, I would like to have my cake and eat it too. The world does not work that way. more >>

Family says it's grateful for return of dog

Editor, the Advocate: On Sept. 15, our border collie was “taken” from our back yard. My husband and I were upset believing that we would never see our dog again. On Sept. 23, our next-door neighbor brought to my attention a small ad placed in the Victoria Advocate by the Dorothy O’Connor Center that a border collie had been taken to their facility by a local veterinarian, Dr. Beck. I went to see if this was our dog and it was. According to the O’Connor personnel, someone had picked up our dog and taken it to Dr. Beck’s office. He in turn looked after our dog for a few days and than took him to the center. I want to take this opportunity to say thank you to all who were involved in the care of our dog, “Oreo.” Thank you to the unknown person who picked him up and took him to Dr. Beck, thank you to Dr. Beck for the care he imparted to Oreo, and thank you to the wonderful staff from the Dorothy O’Connor Center, who took such good care of Oreo. All of everyone’s efforts made our family, including five grandchildren, very happy. more >>

Where is all the greed headed?

Editor, the Advocate: Taking a cue from Johnny Cash and his “different point of view,” I wish to comment on some items “in the news,” over a dog euthanized in the wake of approaching IKE. more >>

Privacy has infringed on many freedoms

Editor, the Advocate: This “privacy” business has gotten way out of hand. Need permission to pray for someone, you ask about someone at a hospital or nursing home, they become blank, speechless. What can we do to get this freedom back? more >>

Symphony thanks Center for maintenance

Editor, the Advocate: The Victoria Symphony would like to thank Randy Collins of Collins Music Center for generously maintaining our Musical Petting Zoo instruments. It would be difficult to take these instruments to the sheer numbers of children in this and surrounding communities who have their first instrumental music experiences on them without the terrific work of Mel, Mary, Joyce and Lance. We appreciate the role you play in our community outreach and your support of the Victoria Symphony! more >>
