The public perception of the city’s refusal to air opposition to any nuclear power plant coming into Victoria County is that the city was unfair because it had allowed pro-nuclear power presentations on its Channel 15 (Advocate front page, Oct. 9).
The city’s public information officer, O.C. Garza, said the cable channel’s purpose is to provide residents with information about city activities and interests. And he said the agreement the city has with Suddenlink Cable prohibits the city from competing with other local channels.
Garza may be correct in adhering to that agreement, but the accord could be interpreted differently. Certainly, the advent of nuclear power in our county is of interest to everybody in the county and should be to the city, as well. After all, the city did air a pro-nuclear presentation on its channel.
We think it is necessary to gather all input about nuclear power — a constant pro and con tradeoff — so all of us can decide for ourselves what position is best to take. To answer the criticism the city has received for not broadcasting an anti-nuclear forum, officials should organize another forum with representation from both sides and air that on Channel 15. Those supporting nuclear power have welcomed the chance to discuss all of the issues surrounding this energy source.
When all the information is in, we can make intelligent decisions about nuclear power in our community.
