Randy Saenz is new mayor of Cuero

CUERO – Independent business owner Randy Saenz has been elected the new mayor of Cuero.Saenz outpolled former police chief W.T. “Tony” Allen with 59 percent of the vote in an election that featured a heavier-than-usual turnout. More than 1,700 voters went to the polls, including more than 1,300 during the early voting period. About 500 more people voted than went to the polls in 2007 when five candidates sought two at-large city council seats. more >>

Cuero man killed after being hit by car identified

CUERO – Bartholo Martinez, 47, of Cuero, was killed early Sunday morning while crossing the 1200 block of East Broadway Street (U.S. Highway 87) near the 24-hour Wal-Mart store. DeWitt County Justice of the Peace Peggy Mayer pronounced Martinez dead at the scene at 2:30 a.m. Candace Lewis of Victoria, who was driving a 2006 Hyundai toward Victoria, hit Martinez who was crossing the road toward Wal-Mart in the middle of the block. Lewis did not see Martinez in time to avoid hitting him and immediately called 911, according to a new release from the Cuero Police Department. more >>

Charity offers Taste of the Trail

CHEAPSIDE – Supporters of the Chisholm Trail Heritage Museum ponied up more than $220,000 during Taste of the Trail IV on April 19 at the Bellvue Ranch. The money raised will be used as matching funds required for recently awarded grants. Those grants include a $1 million grant from the Economic Development Administration of the U.S. Department of Commerce and $345,000 from the Save America’s Treasures program. more >>
