Victoria stores are optimistic

Sunday was the last day Freda Calhoun could use a coupon at Bath & Body Works in the Victoria Mall, so the Edna woman went shopping.Calhoun was one of many that went shopping in Victoria during Thanksgiving weekend, according to some shop owners and managers. They said this weekend's sales met or surpassed last year's Thanksgiving weekend sales. more >>

Barr earned a Bachelor of Business Administration from UHV in 2002 and is pursuing a master's degree in entrepreneurship and economic development from the UHV School of Business Administration. Margaret Rice, chief of staff at the University of Houston-Victoria, was one of only 100 women leaders statewide to be selected to attend Leadership Texas 2009, a program of the Foundation for Women's Resources that begins in March. The program is designed to help identify and develop Texas women leaders by providing them with essential information, awareness of ongoing changes and sharpened leadership skills. Shonna Jud was recently hired as a secretary in the Office of Admissions and Records at the University of Houston-Victoria. Lee Swearingen, president of Coldwell Banker The Ron Brown Company, celebrated the 55th year of business in Victoria and the surrounding area. Ron Brown opened the real estate business in 1953 in a gas station downtown. In 1975 Lee Swearingen purchased the real estate business now located on Navarro Street. The company became affiliated with Coldwell Banker in 2000 and has grown to service the Texas Mid Coast with six offices. Victoria Advocate's "Relatively Speaking" columnist, Martha Everman Jones, Ph.D., was awarded first place Columnist Writer in the 2008 Texas State Genealogical Society Writing Contest in Abilene in October. Tim Hudson, president of the University of Houston-Victoria, is the new vice chairman of the Texas International Education Consortium. TIEC is an Austin-based association of 32 Texas universities that work together to provide programs for international students and worldwide consultation for developing higher education systems. Yvonne Garcia recently was named the September Employee of the Month at the University of Houston-Victoria. She is an admissions analyst in Admissions and Records. She recently took on more job responsibility by helping international students with their questions about the UHV admissions process. She received a framed certificate and a $50 gift card. more >>

What would it be like if pets had cell phones?

I recently wrote an article about parents communicating with their children through text messaging. Sending a text message is an easy and quick way to keep tabs on children, find out where they are, when they are coming home and remind them to bring in the trash can. Well, what about those of us who would like to call up our pets now and then? (Disclaimer: I am in no way comparing owning a pet to having children. Please no angry letters or e-mails). I'm sure plenty of us out there (OK, maybe just me) wouldn't mind catching up with Fido or Fluffy during the day just to find out what they are doing. more >>

Holt Cat celebrates 75 years in Texas

A small, burnt orange machine chugged and shook as bystanders gazed, inching their way around it. The contraption, a 1917 Holt "Caterpillar" Model 45 tractor, was one of several machines on display at the Victoria Holt Cat site. John G. Miller, Victoria County Constable Precinct 4, has completed 40 hours of continuing education for constables at the Bill Blackwood Law Enforcement Management Institute of Texas. Topics included leadership, ethics, budgeting, civil process, collections and media relations. Denee Thomas recently was hired as the manager of the Letting Education Achieve Dreams (LEAD) program at the University of Houston-Victoria. Thomas oversees the program that helps recruit and assist first-generation college students. She will also teach classes in microbiology in the School of Arts and Sciences. Prior to taking her current post, she served for seven years as the associate dean for student affairs in the School of Dentistry at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center-San Antonio. more >>
