advertising

Editor’s note: The school and city elections will be Saturday, May 10. To help voters learn more about the contested races in their communities, the Advocate will profile those races. Today’s candidates are seeking the office of mayor in Cuero.

Name: W. T. “Tony” Allen

Age: 62

Office Seeking: Mayor

City and County of Residence: Cuero, Dewitt County

Current Occupation: retired police chief

Why do you want to serve in this office?

I was born and raised in Cuero. I care about this community and its people. I have served this community in the service, in the police department for 31 years, and through other community involvement. I want to continue to be a voice for all the people of Cuero on how the city is run. I feel like I can make a difference.

What three issues facing this office do you feel are the most important and how will you approach them?

Economics – This will take a united council, not one individual to do something about improving our economic situation. I won’t make promises I can’t keep.

Street repairs – Find a way to raise our revenue without raising taxes and utility rates to improve our infrastructure, specifically the streets.

Listening to all citizens’ concerns – We need to address citizens’ concerns, no matter how rich or poor or if the problem is large or small.

601 First St., Cuero; 361-275-2187.

Name: Randy Saenz

Age: 35

Office Seeking: Mayor

City and County of Residence: Cuero, DeWitt County

Current Occupation: Independent

Why do you want to serve in this office?

I want to lead the city of Cuero into a new era – one that demands reasonable growth and still maintain our small town image. I want to make sure that our future (our children) don’t have to move out of Cuero to find a good job. And I want the council to unite and get involved as leaders to run the city like a business – one that will not pass the cost of mismanagement to its consumers.

What three issues facing this office do you feel are the most important and how will you approach them?

1. For the last five years our budget has increased almost a million per year. Slow budget growth down.

2. Electricity rates are too high for business and public, I plan on raising demand rates to help business and promote new growth to help our private citizens.

3. Our streets are a big issue concerning all of our citizens, I would have council consider a more aggressive strategy on maintenance programs.
