Sacred Heart Parish plans annual fall picnic for Aug. 31

Lavaca County doctor to be recognized for service

HALLETTSVILLE – Dr. Barbara Conner, who has practiced medicine in Lavaca County for more than 30 years, will be honored Tuesday with a reception from 2-4 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church fellowship hall. Conner, a geriatrics specialist, was also recognized Monday, July 28 with a proclamation from the Lavaca County Commissioners Court citing her “30 years of loyal and continuing service to her patients, to the Hallettsville area and to Lavaca County.” more >>

HALLETTSVILLE – A ban on outdoor burning has been issued in Lavaca County. On Monday, the Lavaca County Commissioners Court voted unanimously to reinstate the ban that had been lifted two weeks ago. The first ban had been ordered on June 20 before being lifted on July 14. more >>

Yoakum man arrested for pot possession

YOAKUM – A 36-year-old Yoakum man was arrested Friday night after marijuana and “equipment that is routinely used to package drugs for distribution” were found in his home. Calvin Ray Price was taken into custody at his home in the 200 block of Davidson Street after Lavaca County Sheriff’s Department deputies, Department of Public Safety troopers, and Yoakum Police Department officers executed a search warrant at his home, according to a news release from the Lavaca County Sheriff’s Office. Price is charged with possession of marijuana. more >>

Yoakum’s Front Street Railroad Park project underway

YOAKUM – The city of Yoakum continues to develop and upgrade its park system with recent improvements at Yoakum City Park and Mack Jamison Park. YOAKUM –Mike Staggs believes two of his half Siberian Husky, half timber wolf dogs, are the victims of a dog fighting ring in Lavaca County. Cheyenne was shot and killed by a neighbor in November. Later a second dog with the same lineage, Bear, belonging to Staggs disappeared. more >>

Half Moon Holidays highlight Independence Day

SHINER – The area’s biggest celebration this holiday weekend is Shiner’s annual Half Moon Holidays. “Half Moon Holidays started 29 years ago as a fundraiser for the hospital. Lavaca County orders burn ban

HALLETTSVILLE – Lavaca County has joined most of the other counties in the area in putting a burn ban in place. On Friday, the Lavaca County Commissioners Court voted to issue an order enacting the burn ban due to the dry conditions in the county. The ban will be in effect for 90 days unless lifted earlier by the commissioners court. more >>

Shiner coach Daniel Boedeker couldn’t help but notice the Shiner Bock sign at Dell Diamond in Round Rock when the Comanches played in the 2004 Class 1A state championship game. “It’s still there,” Boedeker said. “I remember looking up and seeing that.
