At about 5:40 a.m., the Disabled American Veterans Chevrolet van collided with a Ford F-250 pickup pulling a gooseneck trailer loaded with two 4,000-pound pieces of oil field machinery, said Wharton Police Officer Rudy Flores who investigated the wreck.
The machinery ended up in the road.
The truck pulled out from the private drive of a barbecue restaurant in the 3900 block of U.S. Highway 59 into the path of the van headed north on the highway.
Seven of the nine veterans complained of chest pains and were taken by ambulance to Gulf Coast Medical Center in Wharton.
The men ranged in age from 59 to 84. Six of them were from El Campo, two from Wharton and one from Edna.
The driver of the pickup, Max Solo of Louisiana, was issued a citation for failure to yield the right of way at a stop sign, Flores said.
