Louise High School leaps ahead

LOUISE – A year of double doses of math and science helped Louise High School jump two levels in the state’s latest ratings.The school of about 180 students went from unacceptable last school year to recognized this year, according to the Texas Education Agency’s ratings released earlier this month. more >>

Disabled veterans escape serious injury in highway collision

WHARTON – A van filled with military veterans headed for the VA hospital in Houston crashed on U.S. Highway 59 Wednesday morning, but all 10 occupants escaped serious injury. At about 5:40 a.m., the Disabled American Veterans Chevrolet van collided with a Ford F-250 pickup pulling a gooseneck trailer loaded with two 4,000-pound pieces of oil field machinery, said Wharton Police Officer Rudy Flores who investigated the wreck. more >>

Husband wounds wife, kills self

EL CAMPO – A man took his own life after trying to murder his estranged wife early Tuesday morning, police said. Kallen Matthew Bubela, 26, shot himself in the head with the same 9 mm gun he had tried to kill his wife with moments earlier, according to a news release from the El Campo Police Department. more >>

No bread shortages for Golden Crescent

A lot of area residents will be breaking bread tonight and in the days to come courtesy of Mrs. Baird’s Bread and the Food Bank of the Golden Crescent. WHARTON – Three garbage disposal companies submitted bids Thursday to replace the city’s current provider when its contract expires at the end of September. An ultralight airplane crash landed at Wharton Municipal Airport at 10 a.m. Tuesday, sending one man to the hospital. Pilot Scott Hughes of Houston and passenger Thomas Lapp of Winter Garden, Fla., were 50 feet in the air when their Predator Powered Parachute airplane came crashing down after the wind stopped blowing. more >>

WHARTON COUNTY — Authorities walked into 12 game rooms across the county at 1 p.m. Wednesday and started seizing eight-liner machines. “We’ve had complaints for many, many months,” District Attorney Josh McCowan said.
