Tornadoes near Bayside cause most damage in region

The sky darkened over Bayside and the heavy rain started as a squall from Hurricane Dolly moved inland from the Gulf of Mexico on Wednesday.

It wasn’t long after that the National Weather Service received a report of damage caused by a tornado six miles south of the small coastal town in Refugio County.

That damage included a travel trailer on its side, a roof that toppled, uprooted trees and three collapsed sheds.

Bayside Postmaster Rosa Canales said she hadn’t heard about any damage, but she heard reports there were tornadoes spotted nearby.

“I did hear there was one that crossed near the bridge to the south and then one back on the other side,” she said.

Keith Stellman with the National Weather Service said his office in Corpus Christi had issued four tornado warnings by early afternoon, including one for the Bayside area.

“We’re just getting reports of damage from the one in the Bayside area,” he said. “We started tracking it when it was coming onshore and issued a warning when it got into the Bayside area.”

That was the worst hurricane related weather reported in the Victoria area, which received moderate to heavy showers.

Retired journalist Pat Hathcock said even at his Seadrift home near San Antonio Bay, things were quiet.

“We had some rain early in the morning and then it slacked off enough where we could walk the dogs after 7 or so,” he said. “People are sort of sitting and watching, but it’s not going to amount to anything.”

Forecaster Waylon Collins with the weather service said the rain and tornado threat may still not be over today.

“We’re going to have widespread showers and thunderstorms in the morning,” he said. That drops to about 60 or 70 percent for this afternoon.

Some areas could get as much as 4 to 8 inches of rain, but most areas should received only 2 to 4 inches, Collins said.
