EDNA – A Ford F-350 struck a Jackson County ambulance around 9 a.m. Tuesday as the ambulance was responding to a grass fire off U.S. Highway 59 South, injuring both drivers, a trooper said.

They were taken to hospitals by private vehicle, Department of Public Safety Trooper Brandon Curlee said. Both were released after treatment.

The 39-year-old paramedic was taken to Jackson County Healthcare Center in Edna by a police officer.

Co-workers took the 25-year-old driver of an Exterran-owned F-350 to DeTar Hospital Navarro.

Curlee would not release the names of the drivers, saying the investigation is still underway.

The wreck occurred about a mile south of the Farm-to-Market Road 234 South exit when the Edna-based ambulance came to a stop on the shoulder with its emergency lights flashing. The driver of the truck, which was traveling in the outer lane, caught the left rear of the ambulance, Curlee said.

As officers cleaned debris from the wreck around 9:30 a.m, firefighters continued to fight the fire in the field adjacent to where the collision occurred.

Firefighters had arrived at the unattended fire at 8:40 a.m. The fire was extinguished by 10:30 a.m.

Until the ambulance can be repaired, Edna will have only two ambulances to respond to emergencies, City Manager Ken Pryor said.

Until the ambulance is fixed, the city will call for assistance from surrounding communities, such as Ganado and Victoria, when needed, Pryor said.
