The match-up was the only contested race in the Democratic and Republican primaries in the county.
Thompson won the race by 11 votes.
“I’m happy with the win,” he said. “I thought it was a good turnout and I look forward to the community supporting me in November.”
Hunt said he appreciated the public’s support.
“Any race that comes out this close means the people in the county were split, almost half for me and half for him,” he said. “I hope the county gets the better of the choices.”
Seven provisional ballots have yet to be counted and one mail-in ballot, so numbers could change.
Thompson, a Jackson County native, works as a Jackson County sheriff’s deputy. He now faces Republican Cyndie Poulton in the Nov. 4 general election.
