GONZALES – The annual Come and Take It festival began with a bang Thursday as a ceremony re-enacting the first shot of the Texas Revolution was held in downtown Gonzales. Prior to the symbolic cannon firing by Gonzales County Sheriff Glen Satchleban, the names of the 41 men from Gonzales and Green DeWitt’s Colony who died at the Alamo were read. As Bob Burchard, president of the Gonzales County Historical Commission, called the men’s names, Gonzales fourth graders placed Texas flags at markers with each man’s name. more >>

GONZALES – The murder trial of Steve and Bettie Ramirez remains set for Monday, Nov. 3. The couple was indicted in the starving death of their adopted daughter, Crystal Ramirez, 8, in August last year. After a brief pre-trial hearing on Wednesday, another hearing was scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 8, said Vicki Pattillo, Gonzales County District Attorney. District Judge W.C. GONZALES – A new poultry diagnostic laboratory is on its way to Gonzales. Construction was approved in mid-August for a lab on the 1200 block of Sarah DeWitt Drive, about a mile away from the old lab, according to a Texas Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory news release. more >>

A Gonzales man who stopped a runaway vehicle that ran over its owner in Victoria Sunday morning said he was just doing what he was trained to do. “I’m a volunteer firefighter for the Belmont Volunteer Fire Department and I just did what I was supposed to,” Charley Baker said. “I jumped in the vehicle while it was going in circles, pressed the brake, put it in park and parked it.” more >>
