Matagorda County tops country in annual bird count

MATAGORDA - The 61-year-old nature lover watched pelicans dive into the Colorado River from her campsite. Dot Parkos, a retiree from Corpus Christi, came to the Matagorda Bay Nature Park to check out birds she's never seen in their natural habitat. She took a class on bird watching from the park's nature center to amp up her skills for her weeklong stay. more >>

Woman dies in Bay City wreck

BAY CITY – A 19-year-old Wadsworth woman died early Sunday morning after the car she was a passenger in collided with a tree. Barbara Cox, 25, of Bay City was traveling south on Norville Street in Bay City just before 2 a.m. when her car went off the side of the road and struck a tree, said John Adkison, a communications officer for Pierce Department of Public Safety. more >>

Matagorda County spared the worst of Ike

As the skies cleared and the wind died down, Matagorda County residents gave thanks that they missed the worst of Hurricane Ike. As of 10 a.m. Saturday morning, Matagorda County officials canceled the mandatory evacuation and curfew that was in place, with the exception of Palacios. Palacios’ curfew will remain from 7 p.m. on Saturday to 7 a.m. today, due to the large power outages and cleanup needed in the area. Residents from elsewhere in the county are, however, now allowed back and are asked to do so with caution. more >>
