Pettus proved it could compete in a strong Class 1A district, but the Eagles weren’t upset when the University Interscholastic League moved them into a new district.
“Any little mistake in any of those games, there’s no chance to win,” Pettus coach Steve Marbach said. “We feel like week in and week out we’re going to have a good chance in this district.”
Marbach’s observation is shared by District 31-1A opponents Yorktown, Woodsboro, Runge, Falls City and Charlotte.
“Not that we didn’t think we could compete in that other district, but all three playoff teams did move out of the district we’re competing in,” Woodsboro coach Brad Vickers said.
Yorktown’s drop from 2A to 1A has drawn a note of caution from new coach Kerry Huddleston.
“The perception that we’re 1A so we’re automatically getting in is not true,” said Huddleston, who previously coached at Runge. “You have to have that confidence to be successful. Obviously, the goal is to make the playoffs.”
Runge is happy to be back in a district after small numbers forced it to compete as an independent team the last two years.
“It’s going to be a tough district for us,” Runge coach Brad McElroy said. “For us to get in there and be competitive we’re going to have to stay healthy. We still don’t have a lot of depth.”
