Gonzales and Palacios advanced to the quarterfinals and the three District 28-3A teams could benefit this season.
“Anytime you get to play that many playoff games, it’s got to help your confidence,” Cuero coach Mark Reeve said. “Edna was a playoff team, Yoakum should be better and Goliad has one of the best athletes in the district. I think all of them have the potential right now to be a playoff team. I don’t think there’s anybody in there you could say they’re not going to make the playoffs.”
The Gobblers are favored to win their fifth straight district title under Reeve, but opinions vary on the rest of the pecking order.
“I think Cuero is the favorite,” Yoakum coach Dan Burk said. “I think Gonzales will be good. I think it will be a really, tough competitive district like it was last year.
It should be a little more even this year.” Burk added. “The teams making the playoffs will be the ones that take care of the ball and get the breaks of the game. I think all of that stuff will come into play.”
Gonzales, Palacios and Goliad will have to replace their starting quarterbacks.
“It’s always good when you have your quarterback back,” Edna coach Mike Pierce said. “It doesn’t matter if its a sophomore, a junior or a senior. He’s been underneath and faced the pressure you have to experience.”
Edna shared the District 28-2A title last season before making the jump to 3A, giving the district a sixth team.
“The obvious thing is you get to play one more district game,” Pierce said. “It’s an extra game you have to prepare for. Even with three teams going to the playoffs, it still puts pressure on you to perform well. It usually comes down to depth and injuries and who’s playing the best in October and September.”
