The man was identified as Chad Dement of the Cypress Valley subdivision off Thomaston River Road.
Dement was found about 3:34 a.m. by relatives who had been out searching for him, deputy Jeff Abbott said.
“He was apparently at the rear of his vehicle and it started backing up, backing over him,” he said. “You could tell that he had been dragged a little ways back as the truck rolled back.”
The body was still pinned beneath the truck when the relatives found Dement, he said.
Officers aren’t sure why Dement had stopped and gotten out of the pickup, although the truck had been having transmission problems.
Justice of the Peace Bill Robinson from Yorktown said he pronounced Dement dead about 4:40 a.m.
Robinson said he conducted an inquest at the scene, but did not order an autopsy because it appeared to be an accidental death.
“I haven’t made a final determination on the cause of death and probably won’t do that until I get the blood work back and talk to other people and make sure we didn’t miss anything,” Robinson said
