Charles Papacek was elected chairman, former mayor W.L. “Buzz” Edge is the vice-chair, and Sarah Meyer is the secretary. Other committee members include William Finney, Esther DeLosSantos, Isabel Patton, and former councilman Terry Stock.
Also during the meeting city attorney James Crain gave commission members an overview of their responsibilities.
“You are an advisory committee of the city council. You do the groundwork. The voters are the mechanism by which the charter is amended,” Crain said.
The commission will prepare a report, approved by the majority of members, to present to the city council. The council will then decide whether to call a charter amendment election. Only the voters can approve amendments to the charter.
The commission may meet for up to six months if necessary, according to the charter. The charter was last amended in 2001.
Citizens who have areas of the charter they would like to see changed may submit their recommendations in writing to the city administration building.
The committee will meet again at 5:30 p.m. Monday. Regularly scheduled meetings have been set for 6 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month.
