CUERO – Residents will have the chance to comment on a proposed property tax increase at 6 p.m. today during a special session of the Cuero City Council. The proposed tax, 33.917 cents per $100 valuation, is about two cents higher than last year’s rate of 31.835, and will generate $538,883 in revenue for the city. more >>
CUERO – The Cuero school board will meet in special session at noon Friday to receive public comment on the proposed 2008-09 budget and tax rate. The proposed tax rate is $1.29189 per $100 valuation, a slight increase from last year’s rate of $1.28875. Of that proposed rate, $1.13243 is for maintenance and operations and 15.946 cents is for debt service. more >>

CUERO – The two-hour small-business conference scheduled at the Cuero Chamber of Commerce’s board room today was canceled due to a lack of applicants, organizers said. The “Elvis” is the Elvis lamp that bidders traditionally award to some lucky honoree who must display it in their business for a year. CUERO – A 35-year-old Cuero man is in DeWitt County Jail facing attempted murder charges and seven additional felonies. Police arrested Johnny Hargrove Friday after an investigation into allegations he attempted to kill a 25-year-old Cuero woman with a knife and threatened her children, ages 4 and 9, on July 21 in the 700 block of North Valley Street. Cuero Police Lt. Steven Ellis led the investigation that ended with the attempted murder charge, plus two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, two counts of unlawful restraint, two counts of abandoning/endangering a child, and one count of injury to a child, according to a news release from the Cuero Police Department. more >>

Charles Papacek was elected chairman, former mayor W.L. “Buzz” Edge is the vice-chair, and Sarah Meyer is the secretary.
