Early registration offered for Jingle Bell run

CUERO - The 9th annual Jingle Bell 5k walk/run is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 6 at the Cuero Municipal Park.Registration forms are available at the Cuero Wellness Center, 505 N. Esplanade St. or the Cuero Chamber of Commerce, 124 E. Church St. Early registration is $20 for adults and $15 for students. Undocumented immigrants detained

CUERO - Four undocumented immigrants were detained Monday morning following a traffic stop that began on U.S. Highway 183 north of the city limits. "Two trucks pulled out in front of me and I tried to stop them for speeding," said John Oglesby, DeWitt County Sheriff's Office chief deputy. "I got one of them stopped on Esplanade Street in Cuero. As I was going on into town, I saw the other truck had pulled over and had its hood up like it was having engine trouble. So I checked them, too. They were also undocumented." more >>

Let's Stand Together dishes up Thanksgiving meals for all

CUERO - Isabel Patton is passionate about keeping up the tradition started by her grandmother, Carrie Liendo Ruiz, of providing meals on Thanksgiving. This year will mark the 14th year since Ruiz began the program in 1994 to help those in the Cuero area who can't afford a holiday meal or would be alone on Thanksgiving. Her goal was that they would have a place to go to enjoy the traditional turkey, dressing and cranberry feast. more >>

Alaskan fiddler taking stage in Cuero

CUERO - A lot of fiddlin' around will be going on Thursday at the monthly Cuero Country Opry. It will likely be pretty cool since the man making the music hails from Alaska. Keith Junot from Anchorage, Alaska, who plays both Cajun and Western swing on the fiddle, will be one of the featured performers. Also taking the stage will be Sterling Griffith from Port Lavaca, widely known in this area as a producer of Country and Western shows as well as for his Johnny Cash and Ernest Tubb renditions. CHEAPSIDE - Carl Walker, general manager at Brennan's of Houston, thought it only fitting that he take part in preparing the meal as part of a fundraiser for Cuero's Chisholm Trail Heritage Museum. "Where I grew up in north central Missouri is not far from where the trail ends, so there is a personal tie," Walker said. "Also, I have family, a great aunt, who was a Chisholm. CUERO - Two shots were fired near the residence of Cuero Mayor Randy Saenz at about 8:20 Sunday night, authorities said. A day of appreciation

NORDHEIM - The residents of the Gruenau community are grateful, and they are showing their gratitude, German-style, with a "Night in Old Bavaria" appreciation celebration. Public support is enabling Gruenau Turn & Schuetzen Verein to rebuild the historic, 100-plus-year-old Gruenau Hall that was destroyed by fire in January 2006. To show its appreciation, the group will host an evening of free German music and food from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the Nordheim Shooting Club and Dance Hall.
