Gene Pate said Wednesday he wasn’t going to let a little thing like a hurricane stop Friday’s Oilfield Helping Hands Fishing Tournament in Port O’Connor.

Confident that Hurricane Dolly would not affect the fourth annual fundraising event, Pate said the tournament will go on as planned.

“We’re still taking entries,” said Pate, who is the tournament’s coordinator. “We have 253 people entered and about 69 or 70 teams so far.”

Pate said the registration will continue through 8 p.m. today at the Port O’Connor Community Center. Cost is $175 per person. Teams can consist of two to six anglers.

The tournament is open to anyone.

The tournament will begin Friday at 6 a.m.

Money will be awarded to the top five teams in seven different categories. There will also be a drawing for a fully rigged kayak along with silent and live auctions.

Oilfield Helping Hands has raised over $550,000 for charity with its fishing tournament, sporting clay shoots and golf tournaments over the past five years, according to Pate.

One of the beneficiaries will be the Bluebonnet Youth Ranch in Yoakum. Fish caught and brought to scale will be donated to the youth facility.
