Police to start campaign against drunken driving

Late summer revelers are likely to get caught if they drive drunk, police said.

The Victoria Police Department starts increased enforcement of impaired drivers Friday, Chief Bruce Ure said. The campaign runs through Sept. 1.

“This time period, there’s just a very high incidence of drunk driving,” Ure said.

Last August, police arrested 15 people on suspicion of driving while intoxicated, according to police records.

The effort is part of a national campaign called “Drunk driving. Over the limit. Under arrest.”

During the crackdown, police will put extra effort into searching for drunken drivers, Ure said.

“If you’re caught driving impaired, you’re going to jail,” Ure said.

Police have arrested 55 intoxicated drivers in the first half of this year, according to police records. Officers arrested 68 drunken drivers in the first six months of 2007.

Sheriff T. Michael O’Connor said his office was not asked to participate in this campaign. Still, deputies take these offenses seriously, he said.

“We do it every day,” O’Connor said.
