Police arrested Charles Milton Dowell Jr., 36, of Port Lavaca, on suspicion of robbery. Two other people riding in his truck were arrested on unrelated charges.
A man wearing an aqua cap, a green shirt and tan shorts walked into the JC Food Mart at about 9 p.m. Thursday, according to a police report. A video shows him buying a pack of gum, the report said, but when the cashier opened the register the man reached across the counter. He’s accused of grabbing about $2,200, according to the report.
Clerks at the convenience store at 5801 N. John Stockbauer Drive said the woman working behind the counter Thursday likely wouldn’t return to work Friday.
Witnesses saw a white Ford pickup speeding away from the scene.
Officers later saw a similar truck at the Discovery Inn Motel at 3103 U.S. Highway 59, according to the report. A green shirt and aqua cap were in the back seat.
Police followed the car, and stopped it after Dowell allegedly did not signal.
Billy Jack Kalisek, 32, of Pt. Lavaca and Cherisse Daniels, 27, of Victoria were also in the car. Both were arrested on suspicion of public intoxication. Police also found warrants charging Daniels with possession of a controlled substance and Kalisek with failure to appear.
“It’s still undetermined how many people were involved in the robbery,” Detective Jeffery Lehnert said.
