Dierdorf remembers being an NFL novice

CBS analyst Dan Dierdorf, who will be calling today’s Chiefs-Patriots game along with Greg Gumbel, understands it could be a blowout.“We’re always prepared for that,” he said by phone. “When you got a young team like the Chiefs, one of the youngest teams I’ve seen on paper, going up against a team like the Patriots, you’re definitely prepared for that possibility.” more >>

For Chiefs rookies, nothing regular about first regular-season game

F OXBOROUGH, Mass. | Glenn Dorsey played at the highest level of college football while at Louisiana State. He performed weekly in stadiums full of fans who were adoring at home or hostile on the road. His final collegiate game was played for the national championship. He’s still woefully unprepared for what to expect in his first professional game today when his Chiefs play the New England Patriots. more >>

Favre isn’t an average Joe

When he slips on his New York Jets uniform today, quarterback Brett Favre knows there will be skeptics. He’ll be compared to Joe Namath finishing his career with the Los Angeles Rams. Or Johnny Unitas with the San Diego Chargers. Or Michael Jordan with the Washington Wizards. more >>

Chiefs suffer from lack of respect, not motivation

The no-respect card. Rodney Dangerfield played it rather effectively for an entire career. Coaches in every sport scan newspapers, radio and TV commentary looking for an excuse to pull out the no-respect card. John McCain hopes the card will land him the presidency, selling the myth the media don’t respect his Miss Alaska vice-presidential pick simply because she’s cute, right wing and clueless about the world outside of Alaska. more >>

More about the Chiefs' rookies

Pos.PlayerRDComment
OTBranden Albert1He will probably start today after missing all of the preseason because of a foot injury.
CBBrandon Carr5He should play a lot today because the Patriots use so many three-receiver formations.
RBJamaal Charles3The fastest running back should get playing time today as a change of pace to Larry Johnson.
TEBrad Cottam3From Tennessee, he will be the second tight end, joining Tony Gonzalez.
FBMike CoxFAHe played for Chan Gailey at Georgia Tech, so he knows the offense better than the veterans.
OLBrian De La PuenteFAHe joined the Chiefs last weekend after spending the preseason with San Francisco.
DTGlenn Dorsey1The Chiefs’ top pick needs to make an impact if the Chiefs are to make dramatic improvement.
CBBrandon Flowers2Perhaps the most impressive of Chiefs rookies in training camp. He’s small but fearless.
WRWill Franklin4The former Missouri Tiger won’t play today after having recent arthroscopic knee surgery.
DEBrian Johnston7He should play some as a reserve.
CBMaurice LeggettFAUndrafted, he made the team despite long odds and could play today on special teams.
SDaJuan Morgan3An immediate contributor on special teams, he could win a starting spot later in the season.
OTBarry Richardson6He was overwhelmed at times during the preseason.
RBDantrell SavageFAThe diminutive kick returner might have to wait for another day to make his NFL debut.
LBErik WaldenFAHe joined Chiefs after spending preseason with Dallas but could play today on special teams.
RD — Round drafted

Cowboys open against upstart Browns

CLEVELAND – They’re more American Idol than America’s Team these days. Celebrities in shoulder pads, the Dallas Cowboys have stars on their helmets, on the field and on their guest list. From T.O. to Romo to Jerry Jones to Jessica Simpson to Pacman (sorry, make that Adam), the Cowboys can dazzle on the red carpet or in the red zone. more >>

Edwards says Chiefs must focus on stopping the run

Herm Edwards is midsentence when he changes the subject. Someone asked him about the pass rush, but that’s a secondary concern to Edwards now. Not when there’s something else on his mind. “You’ve got to be able to stop the run if you’re going to sack the quarterback,” said Edwards, the Chiefs’ coach. “We preach that to our defense.” more >>

Chiefs notebook: Edwards excited about opener

Almost game time Coach Herm Edwards will see his plan for rebuilding the Chiefs come to fruition Sunday when they begin the season against the Patriots in New England. He was in favor of blowing up the roster after last season’s debacle, and the Chiefs now have 15 rookies and 10 other players in their second NFL season. more >>
